When Abel learns that his 60-year-old mother Sylvie is about to marry a man in prison, he freaks out. With the help of his best friend, Clémence, he will do whatever it takes to protect her. But meeting Michel, his new stepfather, may well offer him a fresh perspective.

COMMENTARY
Louis Garrel has always fascinated and delighted audiences thanks to his light touch and his mercurial verve, all the while showing that he can inhabit characters that resonate deeply on a personal, real-life level, too. The Innocent is no exception. It’s a romantic thriller, moving and joyful at once, that plays various themes against each other and straddles two genres, romantic comedy and action film. As in his three previous films, the actor/director draws on his own life story to tell that of Abel, who is opposed to his mother Sylvie’s marriage to a prison inmate. The film is a romp bursting with joie-de-vivre, vaunting a stellar cast.

LOUIS GARREL
Born in Paris in 1983, Louis Garrel is the son of filmmaker Philippe Garrel. As an actor, he has worked with his father and directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Roman Polanski, and Woody Allen. As a director, he made his debut with the short My Friends. In 2015, he directed his first feature film, Two Friends, which premiered at Cannes’ Critics’ Week. The Innocent is the fourth film he has directed.

 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
The starting point of the story is the real story of my mother, Brigitte Sy, who conducted theater workshops in prisons: she did get married in prison and I did get along with my stepfather, who opened the doors of a world I knew nothing about. Always fun to see two worlds rubbing up against one another.
