New York, 1933. Three friends, Doctor Burt Berendsen, the attorney Harold Woodman, and a nurse, Valerie Voze, witness a murder, yet wind up being the top suspects. While they try to save their reputations, the three discover that they are at the heart of one of the most shocking plots in the history of the United States.

COMMENTARY
Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington immerge themselves in the noirish 1930s atmosphere concocted by the eclectic cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (who has worked with Alfonso Cuarón, Terrence Malick, and Tim Burton) and the direction (and script) of David O. Russell, masterful weaver of plots that twist and twine and appearances that are deceptive. In the background, an outrageous scheme based on a real-life conspiracy. On the screen, in addition to the leads, a remarkable Anglo-American cast lines up stars like Robert De Niro, Andrea Riseborough, Zoe Saldana, Mike Meyer, Rami Malek, and Chris Rock.

DAVID O. RUSSELL
New York director David O. Russell (born in 1958) has impressed his signature hallmark style in contemporary Hollywood cinema. Following his debut with Spanking the Monkey (1994), he worked with equal self-assurance in comedy (Flirting with Disaster, I Heart Huckabees) and in films that reflect on certain mainstays of American culture (The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook or American Hustle), winning several nominations for an Oscar®.

 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Friendship and love are the bedrock of the movie, and to me, the most important thing is the friendship between these characters. The friendship between Harold Woodman and Burt Berendsen is especially important, and the friendship pact they take to look out for each other and not let each other die, which then gets extended to include Valerie Voze, is the pillar of the story. Those are good friends to have; friends who have seen the best of you, so they can help you remember and get back to the best of you. These are characters that know how to live and love life in spite of any trouble. That’s what makes them heroes to me.
