On October 31st, 1969, television programs all over America were interrupted by a special announcement: in Los Angeles, Raffaele Minichiello, a Marine who was highly decorated for his courage on the battlefield, had hijacked a TWA jet. So began the longest hijacking in the history of American aviation.

COMMENTARY
Raffaele Minichiello, a former marine, tells his story, in front of Alex Infascelli’s camera: his life in Italy and the U.S. (where he went back to live, years later); the longest hijacking in history, and the media darling he became; his more ordinary existence and family life (he opened a gas station in Rome), plus an underlying mystery or two. A relaxed, smiling individual, almost surreal, captured by the filmmaker and rounded out by interviews with members of the film crews, passengers on the flights, and stock footage of the event.

ALEX INFASCELLI
Born in Rome in 1967, Alex Infascelli started out as an AD in Los Angeles, then returned to Italy and directed music videos. In 2001, his feature directorial debut, Almost Blue, competed at Cannes’ Critics’ Week and won a David di Donatello, a Silver Ribbon, and a Golden Ciak. In 2015 and 2021, Infascelli won the David for his documentaries S Is for Stanley and My Name is Francesco Totti.

 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Making a film about Raffaele, I was faced with an enigma. Raffaele is undecipherable, immersed in his own world, his own time. This continuous zooming in and out of the character happened to produce my most honest film, and not just in terms of my approach or empathy with the lead, but from a narrative point of view.
