VIDEO ESSAY FILM FESTIVAL 2021 – Award Ceremony

Following the success of the 2020 edition, the Video Essay Film Festival returns, in collaboration with Professor Andrea Minuz and the Department of History, Anthropology, Religion, Art, Performing Arts of the Sapienza Università in Rome. The VEFF will again assign awards to one of the most innovative forms of criticism and thinking about audio-visual art, the video essay, as a new form of criticism and reflection upon cinema through images, text, editing and sound. The festival offers an international selection which will be judged by an official jury. For the year 2021, this event, the only one of its kind in Italy, adds a new section: Video Essay – Classic. For the fiftieth anniversary of The Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick, the festival has decided to invite fans, scholars, film lovers and students from film schools and university departments to try their hand at a video essay about a film that has deeply influenced the outlook on the contemporary age as well as the freedom of arthouse cinema.

The selected video essays will be divided between two different sections: Competition and Video Essay – Classic. A jury, chaired by filmmaker Daniele Ciprì with members actress and author Chiara Francini, journalist and film critic Cristiana Paternò, the Director of the MAXXI Arte Bartolomeo Pietromarchi and by the General Manager of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma Francesca Via, will award three prizes for both sections: Best Video Essay, Video Form Prize, Essay Content Prize. A further acknowledgment will be awarded by the website BadTaste.it which will post the selected video essay online.

All the selected video essays will be screened during the event before the audience, authors and jury.
