February 12-19: A Tribute to Nino Rota

February 12-19: A Tribute to Nino Rota

Following on the enormous success of the project “Ricordando Eisenstein”, the Fondazione Cinema per Roma is continuing its collaboration with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

From February 12 to 19, 2011, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nino Rota, a tribute to the great Italian composer, entitled Nino Rota: The Music of Italian Cinema,  will be held at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome

The tribute gets underway with a concert by the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, conducted by Nicola Luisotti. The program includes the Suite from The Leopard and the Concert No. 1 for piano in C major, featuring the rising young pianist Giuseppe Albanese.

On the same dates, February 12 to 19, a retrospective of the films that have made Nino Rota celebrated the world over will be held in the spazio Musa in the Auditorium, spanning his entire career, from 8 ½ and Amarcord with Federico Fellini to Rota’s collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola, which earned him an Oscar® for Best Original Score for The Godfather – Part II in 1975. Prior to each screening audiences will be treated to a montage of clips from The Leopard. Admission to the screenings is free, on a first-come, first-served basis.

And on February 18, at 11 a.m. a special screening for students in Roman schools will be on the program: the documentary Un amico magico: il maestro Nino Rota by Mario Monicelli. Following the screening, the students will meet actress Sabrina Impacciatore in the first of the Q&A sessions “Waiting for the Festival” that introduce actors and directors to student audiences in the months leading up to the International Rome Film Festival.

The tribute to Nino Rota concludes on February 19 at 18:00 in the Teatro Studio with a public talk hosted by Mario Sesti and featuring Caterina D’Amico, Neri Marcorè, Nicola Piovani and Ettore Scola, who will be showing clips from films scored by the composer over the course of his long and eventful career, and discussing them onstage. Admission price: 5 euros.
